One of Canberra College’s year 12 Big Picture students, Connor Winfield has spent the last seven months researching and curating an exhibition that focuses on disability representation through history. Working with an academic mentor from the ANU and museums and institutions worldwide, Connor has collected images of people through history with disabilities that will “allow abled visitors to develop a better understanding of modern experiences of disability and how they can make a positive difference to the lives of people with disability today. People with disability will be able to see themselves represented in history".

This is a project of significance to Connor, who has persisted through his own challenges to find his voice as a disability advocate. “Educating others about the experiences of marginalised communities is very important to me, and through this project I will be able to communicate these experiences through the lens of history. Being disabled myself, I will be able to do so accurately and with knowledge and consideration of the modern disabled community.” Connor is a leader in the community, advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, Disability rights and awareness and is an active member of the ACT Youth Advisory Council (YAC) and the Youth InterACT Scholarship assessment panel.

The exhibition will be on from Aug 27 – Sep 3 2022 at the Civic Library, Mezzanine room, during the library’s opening hours.

It will be accessible to a wide range of abilities, and is easily accessible via public transport.
