Bus fleet accessibility improvement plan

Transport Canberra have been working towards a fully accessible bus fleet by the end of 2022, however unfortunately the impact of the supply chain as a result of COVID-19 has meant that replacement buses due to be delivered by the end of last year will not likely be received until the end of the first half of 2023.

Transport Canberra operates around 456 buses, with 33 currently non-compliant.  This does not mean that all 33 buses are in service together, and Transport Canberra are minimising their use to ensure the occurrence of a non-accessible bus is few and far between.

In the interim, while the new buses are still being delivered, Transport Canberra will manage the allocation of buses to minimise the use of the Renaults as backups only.

This will mean they are primarily used to cover unplanned issues such as breakdowns or late running to maintain reliability for our customers.

Canberrans are encouraged to use the journey planner and NXTBUS to identify the type of bus running on that service and whether it is compliant with the DDA standards.

Transport Canberra will also work with customers to ensure that specific buses are allocated to services where compliance is critical for particular users.

The ACT Government has started to receive the Yutong E12 battery electric buses which are currently going through final commissioning and registration processes required before they can be put into service.

Most of the Transport Canberra bus fleet offers easy access as well as services for hearing, vision and mobility impaired users.

ACT Government delivered 158 new or improved bus stops in 2022 and 2021.

Easy access means there are no steps, so getting into and out of the bus is easier for everyone. Easy access buses have:

  • an extendable ramp
  • a wide front entrance
  • space in the bus to accommodate wheelchairs or prams.
