EOIs open for Speaking Role - a new project from Rebus Theatre

Speaking Role is a free program for people who have a disability that affects their ability to communicate. It is for people who would like to enhance their communication and social skills for volunteering, employment and participation in their community, through the medium of theatre. The program will run on Tuesday mornings from 10am to 12 noon, throughout school terms 1 and 2 of 2020. It will be held at Ainslie Arts Centre in Braddon.

The course will suit people who have some ability to communicate verbally, but have difficulty in always being understood. It is led by two experienced theatre tutors, one of whom is a person with disability.

The program will use the form Playback Theatre. In this established form, participants tell stories from their lives and others act them back. It rewards people’s speech through seeing their words played back, teaches listening skills, and honours the stories of people with disabilities. Some sessions will be devoted directly to job-seeking skills, especially interviews.

The first week will involve participants being interviewed by the tutors, about their goals for the course.

A second course will be held out of business hours, commencing in school term 2, 2020. Details will be finalised in early 2020.

Speaking Role is a project of Rebus Theatre, and is funded by the National Disability Insurance Agency through their Information, Linkages and Capacity-Building program, with support from the Ainslie and Gorman Arts Centres. (You do not need to be a participant of the National Disability Insurance Scheme to take part).
