The Mermaid photoseries - a 2019 I-Day grant

In the water, the Mermaid moves freely. On land, she is disabled. Spaces disable us, not our bodies...

Hanna Cormick is a local artist and a finalist in the 2018 Chief Minister's Inclusion Awards for the Emerging Young Leader award. Cormick is one of the successful recipients of the 2019 I-Day (International Day of People with Disability) grants.  These celebrations help to raise awareness and understanding of disability issues and encourage support for the dignity, rights and well-being of people with disability. 

The Mermaid virtual exhibition is a concept photo series revolving around the performance art character created by Cormick, highlighting aspects of the Social Model of Disability. Each photo is accompanied by text, exploring and highlighting how it is environmental structures, and not bodies, that cause disability. 

This photoseries was released over the last seven days, in the lead up to I-Day, and can now be viewed in full on the Novel Photographic website.
