National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)

WE MAKE INCLUSION HAPPEN by working to support and improve the operation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme in the ACT. 

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a new way of funding individualised support for people with disability including psychosocial disability that involves more choice and control and a lifetime approach to the person’s support needs. It is Australia’s first national Scheme for people with disability. 

In line with other states under the transition to the NDIS the ACT Government has withdrawn from the provision of specialist disability and therapy services provided by the Community Services Directorate and early intervention services provided by the Education and Training Directorate. This has increased the range of non-government organisations working in this area, in line with the principles of the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

The ACT Office for Disability continues to provide strategic advice and practical assistance to enable people with disability to enjoy their rights as citizens of the ACT and to assist in the implementation of the NDIS in the ACT.

The ACT Government has also been:

• Reviewing implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme through an ACT Legislative Assembly inquiry 
• Providing short term support to people with disability who have high or complex needs during crisis (See Integrated Service Response Program)  
• Continuing to collaborate with the Commonwealth Government to ensure the NDIS is meeting its objectives
